We are approaching Mental Health Awareness Day on May 18.

But it’s always time to hear honest, positive stories on how to overcome negative feelings when times are tough.

Mental health is not always pretty, but it is human.

1 in 4 of us will experience mental health issues during our lifetime, and there are organsations dedicated to supporting young adults when it feels like things are falling apart.

Heartfelt stories told by brave people are breaking down the stigma of mental health.

In this film, student Sophie Bennett shares her moving story of how surf lifesaving saved her.

This is a beautiful and inspirational film directed and produced by Will Candelent with additional filming by Andy Brownstone for the BBC.

She talks about finding the thing which gets you out of bed, whatever that might be.

For some of us it’s dancing around in our pyjamas and joining in with a YouTube fitness plan, for others it’s curling up and crying to a Hollywood blockbuster.

Getting your confidence back and turning desperation into hope, and seeing positives can be hard, but it’s not impossible.

What motivates you to keep going? What inspires you to have the grit and determination to push forward even when it’s tough?

Your story can inspire others.

  1. Charity says:

I did not know that Mental Health Awareness day was on May 18th. Thanks so much for sharing that information, I will keep it mind!

  2. Excellent post! Personally writing gets me out of bed. The prospect of the sun and a nice walk gets me out of bed. I’ve been taking the time to enjoy myself during the lockdown and it’s wonderful.
