Who else misses the days of sitting in the same room as your friends and playing split-screen games together. When I was younger and started gaming, me and my friends would play couch co-op games for hours and hours. Games like Golden Eye and Mario Cart were our go-to games when we played together. But that was a good few years ago now, and games have changed a lot over the years, and it seems like game developers are forgetting about their couch co-op audience.

I understand they can’t cater for everyone, and the gamers wanting couch co-op games are probably a very small percentage of their audience, but God dammit, I WANT MORE!

But don’t fret, I’ve come up with a list of couch co-op games that I love and hopefully you will too.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2

Tekken is my absolute favourite fighting game, and I loved the original Tekken Tag, so when I heard they were bringing out a Tekken Tag 2, you can imagine my excitement. I’m mentioning the second one rather than the first just because it’s newer, but both are great!

You can play against each other like the other Tekken games, but what makes this one so different and the reason I put it on this list, is you can team up and fight other players as a team, just like a tag team, who’d have thought?! It’s great fun!

Overcooked 1 and 2

I couldn’t pick between both Overcooked games so I included both, and who said I could? Aye?

Overcooked is so much fun. It’s a cooking simulator game where you play as chefs in kitchens filled with various obstacles and hazards to rapidly prepare meals to specific orders under a time limit. They are so much fun!

You can play it by yourself, but it is so much more fun playing with friends, teamwork and communication is key for this game.

Portal 2

The Portal games are some of the best first-person puzzle platform games I have every played. You can play the story mode by yourself, but there is a separate co-op campaign whereby two players can join up and take part in test courses, The Cooperative Testing Initiative, built specifically for co-op testing.

If you’re into puzzles, platforming, teamwork, and being silly, then this game is for you! I love it and I hope you do to.

A Way Out

A Way Out is one of those gems that come out with co-op gaming 100% in mind, and I love it! The story is pretty good but the way they tell the story is just so much fun! The game is strictly co-op and gives you control over 2 men, Leo and Vincent. Leo is the more brash and risk taker; while Vincent is the more composed and logical of the pair. Depending on your character will depend on what gameplay you see, the gameplay changes with what character does what, Leo would rather knock out a guard while Leo will bargain and bribe with other inmates.

If you’re looking for the ultimate coach co-op game, then A Way Out should definitely be on the top of your list.

Borderland Franchise

Borderlands is one of my favourite games, I especially love Borderlands 2, and to make it even better… IT’S COUCH CO-OP!! Playing Borderlands split screen is so much fun, you take control of a Vault Hunter with specialist abilities that you can chose from, and they’re all pretty fun and unique to play as, my favourite being The Siren class.

The game is set on the planet ‘Pandora’ where it’s rumoured to have an alien vault containing advanced alien technology, something everyone in the Universe is looking for to better their weapons and technology. If you’re looking for a fun co-op shooter, then this is definitely up there with the best.

Rocket League

Rocket League is so much fun, it’s basically a 3v3 football match, but you’re all in cars, with boost to help you fly, and a giant ball. The aim is to score more goals than the opposing team before the time runs out, and scoring is one of the most satisfying things in the whole world, especially if you score straight from kick off.

You can pick and customise your car and add funky accessories like flags, hats, wheels and cool boost streams! There’s plenty of fun modes to play so you’re not just stuck to playing a game of carball if that’s not your thing. It’s definitely worth it, and it is so so much fun!

Resident Evil 5 and 6

Resident Evil 5 and 6 get a lot of hate, but I really like them, yeah they’re a bit ridiculous and over the top, but within the context of the franchise it makes total sense. How are people happy with the main villains always dying by rocket launcher, but Chris Redfield gets hate when he takes his frustration out on a giant bolder. I’m just saying…

But in all seriousness, if you are looking for a fun couch co-op game, then this is definitely up there with fun co-op content, with plenty of splitting up and defending each other throughout the game. You have to be careful with loot when playing on a higher difficulty level as you have to share, which makes it harder in the later levels, but fun arguing over who gets the handgun ammo and who gets the shotgun.

Army of Two

Now these are some of the most fun and real co-op games I have ever played! Well… The first and second one anyway, the 3rd… Not good at all!

You play as either Salem or Rios, they’re partners who are fighting to stay alive and uncover the truth behind what’s really going on within the private military company that employs them. Both are pretty equal in terms of game play but you can take slightly different paths; there’s this really fun thing you can do called aggro; one player can take the heat and draw all gunfire to them while the other player gets the change to sneak around and take out any annoying snipers or gunners. There’re some awesome parts where you go back-to-back with your partner to take out enemies surrounding it, it’s epic and super cool!

All round, Army of Two 1 and 2 are fantastic couch co-op games, but the 3rd is a real let down and loses all the things that made the first 2 so much fun!

That concludes my list of favourite couch co-op games that I hope you found useful and I hope you give a go if you haven’t already! Let me know if you try any of these games or if you have any you think should be on the list, I’m always looking for game suggestions.
