What is Hygge?

Hygge (pronounced Hoo-gah) is a Danish word, and, is described by Collins Dictionaries as the practice of creating ‘cosy and congenial environments that promote emotional well being’.

For many of us our lives are so fast pace that we often forget to stop for a while, slow down and relax. We always seem to be ‘on the go’. Studies have shown that the art of Hygge can improve your mood and encourage positivity within your life.

So how can we practice Hygge in our daily life?

Autumn has to be my favourite season. The nights are drawing in, the weather is getting colder, and it’s time to dig out those sweaters from the back of your wardrobe!

I have been practising the art of Hygge for a couple of years now, and its a great way to relax and unwind. So here are 5 ways that you can enjoy Hygge this Autumn, that won’t break the bank, and you will probably already have a lot of things to create a cozy, warm environment.

Hygge your space!

Soft furnishings

Bring those blankets, throws and cushions out of storage this season, make this space your own. Hygge is very personal, so create a space that you can relax in and enjoy after a long day at work.

Candles and Fairy lights
Set the mood with these, soft lighting, a flickering flame can change the whole mood of a room. It can make the most open and airy of rooms feel more cozy, perfect for those chilly autumn evenings.

If your lucky enough to have access to a fireplace or log burner, even better, there’s nothing like snuggling up with a good book and your blanket in front of the fire!

Warm drinks

Pumpkin spiced latte anyone? Or like me are you more of a hot chocolate, cream and marshmallow fan?

There’s nothing quite like making a warm drink and getting cozy in your new space.

Chunky knit Jumpers and enjoying nature

Who doesn’t love an oversized knitted jumper, when the temperature is dropping the colours outside are changing?

Natural sunlight enhances our senses so connect your home to your garden. Nature is innately relaxing, so position some greenery by your window (I love succulents) and enjoy the autumnal colours. Have you ever thought about decorating your home for Autumn? Pumpkins, pine cones and conkers are some great ways to bring autumn into your home.

Have everything you need? Now enjoy your cozy space!

Snuggle up in your space find a great book, or a movie you love. Relax and unwind.

When the nights get darker and the days colder it’s normal to crave comfort food. Enjoy the simple pleasures of delicious food and treat yourself. Slow cooker recipes are great for this time of year, make a stew, or perhaps a soup?

Put phones and tablets away for an evening. Use music to set the right mood throughout your home. You could even start a hobby, but remember it needs to be relaxing.
