Let’s face it, there’s thousands of opportunities out there just waiting to be taken advantage of. Given that, how do you find the one that is right for you? How do you find your calling?
Just as there is a ton of opportunities out there, there is, happily, an abundance of ways to find your calling. Let’s discuss a few of them together but please feel free to add your own ideas below as well!
The Out of Body Perspective
Also known as the alien strategy, with this practice basically you imagine that you are an alien that inhabits your own body. Hang in there with me, I know this one sounds a little hokey! As the alien, everything about this body is new to you. Look around – what do you see, what do you hear? What do you have the most fun doing?
This exercise is a huge help for getting a new perspective on yourself. It can also make you aware of all the possibilities and resources that you have at your disposal and perhaps take for granted or don’t readily see. Sometimes it really is as simply as looking at something with new eyes to see how amazingly fortunate we are. If you choose this strategy, I challenge you to be an alien for 24-48 hours and see what you come up with.
Take the First Right Step
Instead of wondering what direction to go in pick a direction and go in it. If it’s right for you, take another step. If you find it’s not for you, you’ve eliminated one direction and you can easily course correct.
Most of the answers to your questions about your calling will reveal themselves through doing, not thinking. That is why taking action is so important. You can see, feel, and experience the results in real-time.
Do the Best at Whatever You Do
Why is this one important? It’s all about connections. If someone sees you doing great work in one area, they may proactively reach out to you for great work in another area. And that area just may be your calling.
Listen to Your Intuition
It’s amazing how right our intuition can be. Dedicate some time to really tuning in to your intuition. This can often take some slowing down from the roar of life’s rapid pace, but it’s often worth the listen. Stick with it, be patient, and be ready to hear from your inner self!
Follow Your Fantasies
Lastly, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention to follow you fantasies. If there is something you have always dreamed of doing, go for it! Our fantasies are peepholes into who we really are and what we really think is awesome. Let’s not ignore this insight, let’s follow its path!
What Strategies do you Follow for Finding Your Calling?
Is it one of the above? Do you have a completely new strategy (I’d love to hear about it!). And let’s never forget, we can have more than one calling in our lives. You are never “stuck” with one calling! Flex to new callings as your needs and desires evolve

I’m all about taking the first step! My philosophy is always that no matter what, even if you hate it, you’ve learned something.
I am so on board with your philosophy. Either way you learn something 🙂
I like to follow what makes me happy. Not in some high seeking way, but I don’t want to be stuck miserable and I figure my calling (whatever it is) will be something that makes me happy!
Absolutely Katherine!!
These are all such great tips on how to find your calling! Thanks so much for sharing!
You are welcome Charity – I’m glad you enjoyed the article!
Great tips. I think it’s important that we all try and find that thing we feel like we’re “meant” to do. But definitely not to the detriment that we don’t enjoy the journey along the way. I’m yet to find my calling.
I agree – the journey is half the fun! 🙂
I love listening to my own intuition, and also just taking the first step! Those were the ones I used when I decided to blog about mental health. These are all great tips on how to find your calling!
Thank you Jennifer – it sounds like you have found some great strategies that work really well for you!
Taking the first step is the most important thing according to my point of view. And yeah that’s my philosophy too. Thanks for sharing this.
You are welcome Lomash! I agree about the first step too. 🙂
I agree about taking the first step, it can be daunting if it’s something new but at least you learn something along the way if it doesn’t go as planned. I think we all want to find that thing we’re ‘meant’ to be doing but so many people struggle with it x

It can definitely be a challenge but wonderful when you find it.
I LOVE the idea of an Out of Body Perspective, I’ll have to try that. I’m pretty happy with what I’m doing but that sounds like a fun way to double check!
It definitely is – it’s a fun experience!
Thanks for this Lisa! I’ve been reevaluating my calling lately. I definitely agree that we learn more by doing than thinking.
Glad you enjoyed the article Clarissa! 🙂
The alien strategy sounds like a great philosophy. I guess it is a bit like putting yourself in other people’s shoes. I am a great believer of trying out new things…you never know if you like them or not if you don’t give them a go!

So true – it’s kind of fun to experiment!
I’m really intrigued by this out of body/alien technique so will have to give it a try. I think sometimes we try too hard to find our calling instead of just gravitating towards the things that feel right so I’m all about intuition myself. 🙂
Intuition is such a strong indicator, or gravitational pull for us. Too often we ignore it (guilty as charged) when we should follow it – I totally agree with what you are saying.
