University Summer Break

You’ve just spent the school year working hard to successfully complete your school work and now it’s break time!  So, now what?  How do you productively fill your time until school starts up?

Self-Care

A little self-care might be a good idea, especially if it was a particularly challenging school year.  Perhaps some self-indulgence in some pleasure reading, a vacation, or a trip home to see your family.   It’s always good to hit the reset button after achieving such a big accomplishment.

Internships

Internships are a great way to explore your career of interest to see if it really is the job of your dreams.   They also look fabulous on a resume.   Oftentimes you can find paid internships, which of course, is great for the pocketbook.

You may also find that what you learn on the job will make your subsequent University classes a bit easier, as you can supplement your assignments with practical experience.  Your experiences may also make for great classroom contributions to the lessons.   Professors love it when their students participate!

Employment

Any kind of employment in the summer looks good on your resume and the summer time is the perfect time to pick up some hours at a new job.   Or perhaps you are returning to a past summertime position. It shows your ambition on your resume, while also gives you some spending money for the summer.  Win-win!

Rekindle Relationships

Some of your friendships may have gone by the wayside during the school year as you were busy with homework.  Or perhaps you lived in a new location during the school year, making contact hard until you return home for the summer.

Summertime is a great time to revisit your friendships and take the extra time you now have to connect with friends and catch up on each other’s lives.  Get togethers or little adventures can be a great way to rekindle what brought you together as friends and strengthen any bonds that may have weakened while you were busy at school.

Preparing for Next Term

Lastly, it can be a great time to take a look at your class syllabus for the upcoming term, if available, to see if there is anything you can do over the summer to better prepare yourself for the next term at school.  While you still want to take your much needed break, perhaps as school approaches it might help ease the transition back to school to get a jump start on some required reading!

How do you Spend Your Summers?

Do you work at a part-time or full-time job? An internship?   Simply take the break for all its worth?   Prepare for the next term?  Or?

  5. These are all great ideas! I plan to devote most of my time to blogging and working out this summer. Especially, since there won’t be many places to go to (self-quarantine!)

      Thanks Jenny!

  7. I usually worked, and hung out with my boyfriend, and friends! I had the same job off and on through most of college so I was able to get hours when I came home from school.

    1. Lisa Alioto

That sounds like a perfect set-up with your job Jennifer! (And like a fun break overall!)

  8. I go home this upcoming Friday for summer. Most of my flatmates went home months ago when the pandemic started but I decided to stay on campus to finish off my assignments. Now that it’s all over I’m going to spend the time sunbathing (weather-permitting) and reading. No responsibilities, no deadlines, no stress – I can’t wait

  10. It’s a long time since I was at Uni, but I used to love the summer break. I would usually get away somewhere, and catch up with friends. Also used to work part-time as well, so my summer was always filled with something. These are great ideas for students now!

Thank you Aimsy – it sounds like you enjoyed lovely Uni summers!

  11. I went to university at the complete opposite end of the country to my home and my term breaks were always different from my home friends’ universities so I always used to spend my summers catching up with everyone I hadn’t seen in a year and taking the time to recharge. All great options for spending the summer though x

    1. They sound like wonderful summers Sophie!

  12. When I was in college, before I got a job, I would try and just hang with my friends and enjoy my summer. Once I got a job, I still hung with my friends, but it had to slow down a bit because my job had a lot of my attention and my friends got summer jobs as well. These are great tips!

    1. Thank you Deandra!
