Dealing With Adversity

Over this last summer, I have made it my top priority to go out and take on as many new opportunities as I can. Of course, with every new opportunity comes a new set of possible disappointments. This can feel extremely daunting in the beginning and may even stop you from taking on a new opportunity.

Live Realistically

Over this last summer, I have made it my top priority to go out and take on as many new opportunities as I can. Of course, with every new opportunity comes a new set of possible disappointments. This can feel extremely daunting in the beginning and may even stop you from taking on a new opportunity.

Positive vs Delusional

In an attempt to try to keep me as positive as possible, I began to realise that I was dealing with adversities that I was faced as an absolute negative. I was trying so hard to stay “unrealistically positive,” that when a negative situation arose, I would not only feel let down that things didn’t go as planned, but I would feel irritated that I felt let down.  Which was just an unhealthy way to live.  Acting like negative things don’t happen wasn’t helpful and only served to make it harder to deal with them when they arose.

Unrealistically

I use the term “unrealistically happy,” because trying to suppress and neglect your feelings in order to maintain pseudo happiness is not only unhelpful but it’s unhealthy and more importantly, it’s not positive. You wouldn’t be a human being if you only left a single emotion forever, you’re not a robot. Being “realistically positive” means that you are able to feel a negative emotion and sort through that feeling and then deal with it in a positive way, but to try and suppress your feelings to try and maintain happiness will do a lot more damage than good.

Always Look On The Brightside

Last but certainly not least, not to be cliché, but there is a silver lining in most downsides. Of course, somethings go wrong and they’re out of our control. However, sometimes it takes for something to go wrong for us to show us a new direction to take. Ultimately, if the design is foolproof then things wouldn’t go wrong. Adversities teach us how to adapt and stay liquid. A static approach to life can only yield the same results. Change, no matter how uncomfortable it may seem, is the key to a happier life.

  1. I love the concept of always looking on the bright side of things. It’s a topic I’m super passionate about. Thanks for sharing these thoughts!

  2. I highly agree with acknowledging one’s true emotions and try to move forward from there. Forcing ourselves to be happy and burying all the negative emotions only hurts us in the long run.

  3. I totally agree that adversity teaches us to be an adaptable, sometimes the silver lining is the teachable moment! Lovely post.
