Let’s face it, life has thrown some whoppers at us this year.   It hasn’t been easy, it hasn’t been carefree, and it’s all been so new and challenging.  At times, a bit scary.   In times like these, I think that finding some levity in life is essential.  And that brings us to bubble gum and lollipops!

For me, bubble gum and lollipops is more than just what it sounds like.  To me, it represents anything that bring levity and joy to my life.  A smile to my face.  A forgetfulness of life’s challenges.  It brings pure fun!

Sometimes It’s the Simplest of Things

It often doesn’t take much to separate ourselves from the things that are bringing us down (i.e. this pandemic!).  Sometimes it’s a beautiful sunset, a blooming flower, a child running carefree down the street, or even just the smell of a scented candle.

These are my bubble gum and lollipops of life on most days.   They remind me of all the great things that there is still out there in life, waiting to be enjoyed by us.  They make me laugh, they bring on a smile, and most of all they make me forget for a moment that we are in the midst of a pandemic and all that comes with it.

Sometimes It Takes More

The reality of the world we are living in sometimes means that our first go-to flavor of bubble gum and lollipops isn’t always enough.  Sometimes we need more.  And during times like this we need to be prepared to go beyond the simple things in life that bring us joy and have our toolbox of tricks that bring us out of any type of funk.

For some of us it’s planning a weekend with a friend.   Friends are a great diversion – we can easily give them our full attention which means we are no longer thinking of whatever it is that has brought us into a funk.

For others, it’s delving into a good book, bingeing a new series on Netflix, or diving into a favorite hobby.  Whatever it is, it often takes something that demands our full attention to get past the bump in the road we hit.  It’s… the next level of Bubble Gum and Lollipops!

Bubble Gum and Lollipops

What is your flavor of bubble gum and lollipops?  How do you bring yourself out of a funk?  What puts a smile on your face even in the most challenging of times?  Is it sweets and treats?  Friends and fun?  Books and hobbies?

  5. My bubblegum and lollipops usually come with a little fur – My dogs and cats never fail to bring a smile to my face and help me to forget about anything stressful, challenging or negative in my life. Whether it’s cuddling with our flat-coated retriever Indiana in the hammock or playing fetch with our fuzzball cat Pippen, they always know exactly what I need!

Pets really are the best for bringing a smile to our face, aren’t they!

  6. I really like this! So many don’t realize how important it is, especially in times like these, to have a toolkit of happiness that’s easily accessible! Mine is a good cup of coffee and a new book ??

  14. For me, bubble gum and lollipops tend to take the form of playing board games with my husband, cuddling my toddler, stroking my guinea pigs or losing myself in a book! Definitely feels like there’s been more need for these things this year. Thanks for sharing, will be looking at things differently from now on. 🙂
